2. Fiction : Fiction is any narrative which is feigned rather than factual. In most present day discussions, however, the term ‘fiction’ is applied primarily to the novel and the short story, and is sometimes used simply as a synonym for the novel. Ferruifera (fiction)
उस वृत्तान्त को कहा जाता है जो तथ्यपरक न होकर कल्पित होती है। वर्तमान परिप्रेक्ष्य में ‘fiction’ शब्द प्राथमिक रूप से उपन्यास और लघु कथाओं के लिए प्रयुक्त होता है, और कभी-कभी तो इसे उपन्यास का ही समानार्थी मानकर प्रयुक्त किया जाता है।

3. Metaphor : A Metaphor is a phrase which describes one thing by stating another thing with which it can be compared without using the words ‘as’ or ‘like’. Some examples of metaphors :

“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.”
-William Shakespeare
“Fill your paper with the breathing’s of your heart.” – William Wordsworth
‘Miles to go’ is a metaphor for continuing journey of life, and ‘sleep’ is a metaphor of death. Calling a person a “night owl” or an “early bird” or saying “life is a journey’ are common conventional metaphors.
‘Miles to go’ जीवन की निरन्तर यात्रा का रूपक है और ‘sleep मृत्यु का रूपक है। किसी व्यक्ति को ‘night owl’ या early bird’ कहना या life is a journey कहना, ये सब सामान्य परम्परागत रूपक हैं।

4. Simile : Simile (pronounced sim-uh-lee) is a popular literary term that uses “like” or “as” to compare two things. A simile is different from a simple comparison in that it usually compares two different things. As “She looks like you” is a comparison but not a Simile. On the other hand, “She smiles like the sun” is a Simile, as it compares a woman with the sun. Similes describe subjects in unique and thought provoking ways by finding similarities in typically different things.

उपमा (simile सिमॅलि) एक लोकप्रिय साहित्यिक विधा है। जिसमें दो वस्तुओं की तुलना के लिए like’ या as’ का प्रयोग किया जाता है। उपमा एक सामान्य तुलना से इसलिए भिन्न होती है क्योंकि इसमें सामान्यतः दो भिन्न वस्तुओं की तुलना की जाती है। उदाहरण के लिए ‘She looks like you’ एक तुलना है न कि उपमा। जबकि दूसरी ओर ‘She smiles like the sun’ एक उपमा है, क्योंकि यह एक स्त्री की तुलना सूर्य से करती है। उपमाएँ लाक्षणिक रूप से भिन्न वस्तुओं में विचारोत्पादक ढंग से समानताएँ तलाश कर विषय वस्तु को अद्वितीय ढंग से वर्णित करती हैं। उदाहरण के लिए, एक दुबली स्त्री के वर्णन पर विचार कीजिए

  1. She’s as thin as a rail ! (वह छड़ के समान पतली है!)
  2. My love for you is as deep as the sea. (तुम्हारे लिए मेरा प्यार सागर के समान गहरा है।)

5. Alliteration : The word alliteration comes from the Latin word latira, meaning “letters of the alphabet.” Alliteration is the repetition of a certain sound at the beginning of successive words or phrases. It often involves repetition of letters, most importantly; it is a repetition of sounds. It is used to create rhythm through repetition and to evoke emotion through connotations attached to certain sounds. Here are a few examples of alliteration : the alliteration that repeats the ‘s’ and ‘l’ sounds : alliteration

  1. Sally sells seashells by the seashore.
  2. Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Peppers.

6. Onomatopoeia : Sometimes the sound of words gives great support to the sense. The phrase “cool moonlight” with its long vowels and two 1-sounds certainly sound very restful. “This tendency in words to echo meaning by the actual sound is called onomatopoeia.” (Marjorie Boulton). It is found in an almost pure form in many of the words describing sounds, such as buzz, fizz, crash, bang, thump, miaow, quack, giggle, sizzle, hiss, sneeze, thud and snort. Onomatopoeia is very common in poetry. It is used to create artistic effect.

(Marijorie Boulton)। ध्वनि का वर्णन करने वाले अनेक शब्दों में यह लगभग शुद्ध रूप में पाया जाता है, जैसे-buzz, fizz, crash, bang, thump, miaow, quack, giggle, sizzle, hiss, sneeze, thud और snort. Onomatopoeia पद्य में सामान्यतः प्रयुक्त होता है। इसका प्रयोग कलात्मक प्रभाव उत्पन्न करता है।
Other examples of Onomatopoeia (Onomatopoeia के अन्य उदाहरण) :

  • The snakes hiss.
  • The cats mew.
  • Cuckoos coo.
  • Bees are buzzing.

(गीत) शब्द मूलतः ग्रीक शब्द lyrikos’ से उत्पन्न हुआ है इसका अर्थ है-वीणा पर गायी जाने वाली कविता। वर्तमान में lyric में ऐसी कोई भी कविता शामिले की जाती है जो छोटी हो, सरल हो, व्यक्तिनिष्ठ हो और एक एकल विचार को व्यक्त करती हो।

Among the qualities that mark an essay as informal are: humour, graceful style, a personal element, unconventionality or novelty of theme, and freedom from stiffness and affectation.
