Comprehension Questions

Question 1.
Who is the speaker ? What does the poem reveal about the speaker’s character?
Answer:
The poet himself is the speaker. The poem indirectly reveals the virtues of the speaker’s character. It seems that the poet himself is a humble, practical, optimistic, hard working, disciplined and self confident man as he has appreciated these virtues and inspires his readers to follow them.

Question 2.
“Keep your head” why would this be important ? What does Kipling mean “to trust yourself when others doubt you”?
Answer:
It would be important to “keep your head” (be sensible) because when other people may lose their peace of mind, we should be sensible, otherwise the problem will become more serious. By “to trust yourself when others doubt you” poet means that when others doubt us, we should not lose our self confidence. If we are sincere and honest, we should trust ourselves without caring for others.

Question 3.
How does one make allowances for doubting? Why is this important ?
Answer:
One does this by keeping the balance of mind. The person should not lose his temper. He should have self confidence. This is important to be successful in life. If one keeps reacting everybody’s point, one would not be able to concentrate on his aim.

Question 4.
Why does the poet recommend not looking “too good” or “talking too wise”?
Answer:
The poet recommends not looking “too good” or “talking too wise” because one should not try to show what one is not. People should be what they are. Instead of it, people should have self confidence and strong will power.

Question 5.
According to the poet, why is it not good to make ‘dreams your master’?
Answer:
According to the poet, it is not good to make “dreams your master?. Instead of this, we should make efforts to turn our dreams into reality. We can never achieve success just by dreaming. So we should make our sincere efforts to achieve success, otherwise we will lose everything and will get only disappointment.

Question 6.
Is the poet actually talking about *triumph and disaster” or how a person responds to those situations? What is he conveying here?
Answer:
The poet is actually not talking about any triumph and disaster. He has used these words symbolically. By triumph and disaster, he means fovourable or unfavourable conditions. He means to say that we should always be ready to accept success and failure equally. Neither we should be overjoyed at our success nor should feel shattered at our failure.

Question 7.
Why does the poet say “Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it” ?
Answer:
The poet motivates his readers to make the best use of their time. We should keep an account of every second of our life. If we make the fullest and the best use of our time, our success is sure. Therefore the poet says, “Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it”. It means no one can check you from becoming a successful person.

Question 8.
What does “unforgiving minute” suggest ?
“Unforgiving minute”
Answer:
“Unforgiving minute” suggests that we should keep an account of every second of our life. We should make the fullest and the best use of our time. If we waste even a minute of our time, it will not forgive us.

Stanza 1:
If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or, being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;

Explanation: The poet says that when other people lose their peace of mind and blame us, we should keep the balance of mind. When other people doubt us, we should forgive them without caring for them. If we are true and honest. We should trust ourselves. We should not care for the doubts of others. If we need wait, we should wait peacefully. When people tell a lie about us, we should not tell a lie in turn. When other people hate us, we should not do the same with them. We should not try to pose. We should be as good and wise as we are. If we can practice it all, we will be successful.

Stanza 2:
If you can dream – and not make dreams your master; If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with triumph and disaster And treat those two imposters just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to broken, And stoop and build them up with worn-out tools;

Reference: This stanza has been taken from the poem ‘If’ composed by Rudyard Kipling.

Context: The poet presents a realistic and noble picture of life before us. By following some qualities we can certainly become successful.

Explanation: Here the poet points out that we should not waste our time in day-dreaming, and in useless thoughts. We should work accordingly to turn our dreams and thoughts into reality (aim). We should accept both success and failure equally. We should not be overjoyed by our victories and totally disheartened by failures or troubles. We should have strength to hear the truth. It means we should have guts to hear what we have said, or what is presented wrongly by the dishonest people to trap (conspire against) simple people. If the things (achievements) for · which we dedicated all our life, get destroyed before us, we can bear it and regain them with the tools of our hard work and determination then we will be noble people.

Stanza 3:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breath a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on”;

Context: In these lines the poet encourages us to face our losses or failures and to keep up our determination.

Explanation: The poet says that if we pile all our things that we have gained and put them on risk and if we lose them, if we start working again and don’t speak even a word for the loss; when we are physically and mentally tired even then if we can get determined to work (again), in other words, if we maintain ourselves without getting disappointed and if we have a strong will power to do anything, then we will be successful.

Stanza 4:
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings – nor lose the common touch; If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you; If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And-which is more-you’ll be a ‘Man’ my son!

Reference: These lines have been taken from the poem ‘If’ composed by Rudyard Kipling.

Context: In these lines, the poet inspires us to follow certain qualities in our life which are important to maintain balance in life and to get success in life.

Explanation: In these lines, the poet points out that if we mix up with common people, we should keep up our good qualities (virtues). In the same way if we are in the company of great men like kings, we should maintain contacts with the common men. We should treat both common and kingly people equally. In such situation neither enemies nor loving friends will hurt us. We should respect all without giving too much importance to. anybody. We should make the fullest and the best use of every minute. We should never waste our time. If we do all these things, success will be ours: Above all, we shall become ‘Man’ in the true sense.
