Summary of the Lesson
This chapter is about a child, named Amal, who cannot go out because of his poor health. His uncle, Madhab Datta, takes care of him. Amal spends most of his time in his uncle’s courtyard to talk to the people who pass by. All those who know about Amal and his poor health spend a little time with him and leave little gifts. Small children run away when they see Amal’s uncle. Amal asks his uncle if he could spend some more time near the window. But his uncle refuses as so many people come there to talk to Amal because of which Amal is taking time to heal. Then Amal tells his uncle about the holy man whom he wants to see and talk. His uncle enquires about his Holy man. Amal tells that his holy man is a person who comes everyday and tells him everything about far-off-land. A person, named Thakurda, dressed as Holy man enters that time. Amal gets excited to see his Holy man.
Thakurda winks at Madhab Datta to keep his secret. Amalt asks Holy man that where did he go this time. He replies Curlew Island. Amal starts clapping his hands and he reminded Holy man that he promised him to take along next time when he will be healthy. The Holy man agrees and tells that he will teach him such spells which will make Amal to travel anywhere in the world. Madhab Datta interferes and tells him to stop their nonsense talk. Then Amal eagerly asks about Curlew Island. Thakurda, the Holy man, tells him that it was an amazing island of birds, with no people, beside the sea, the beautiful mountains and sky enhances the beauty of the place. A stream dances like molten diamonds. Then Amal wishes to be a bird in that beautiful place. Then the Holy man said that Amal would be in trouble as he wanted to be the curd seller on growing up. And none of the birds will buy his curd. He will have to suffer loss. Again, Madhab Dutta interrupts to stop the non-sense. Amal asks his uncle if the curd seller has come and gone. Madhab Datta says that the curd seller has left to go to his village Kalmipara to hire a flute-player for the marriage of his niece leaving behind pot of curd for Amal.
Amal imagines that he will be getting a letter from the King to join as postman. The village headman makes fun of him and says that Royal Doctor’ will come to see him. Towards the end of the play the doctor actually comes to visit him.

यह कहानी अमले नामक एक बच्चे की है जो अपने घर से बाहर नहीं जा सकता क्योंकि उसका स्वास्थ्य ठीक नहीं है। उसके चाचा, माधव दत्ता, उसकी देखभाल करते हैं। अमल अपना ज्यादातर समय अपने चाचा के घर के आँगन में गुजारता है, ताकि वह आने-जाने वालों से बात कर सके। वे सभी लोग जो अमले की बीमारी के बारे में जानते हैं, उसके साथ थोड़ा समय अवश्य गुजारते हैं और कभी-कभी उसके लिए कुछ उपहार भी लाते हैं। छोटे बच्चे उसके चाचा को देख कर भाग जाते हैं। अमल अपने चाचा से कुछ और देर खिड़की के पास समय व्यतीत करने के लिए पूछता है, परंतु उसके चाचा मना कर देते हैं, क्योंकि बहुत सारे लोग वहाँ इकड़े हो जाते हैं और बहुत देर तक बात करने के कारण अमल की तबीयत में कोई सुधार नहीं हो पा रहा था। तब अमल अपने चाचा को अपने महात्मा जी के बारे में बताता है, और कहता है कि वह उनसे बात करना चाहता है। उसके चाचा महात्मा जी के बारे में पूछते हैं तो वह कहता है कि महात्मा जी उसके पास प्रतिदिन आते हैं और उसे दूर-देश के बारे में सब कुछ बताते हैं। तभी ठाकुरदा महात्मा के वेश में प्रवेश करते हैं और अमल के चाचा को आँख से इशारा करते हैं। अमल उनके आने पर अति-उत्साहित हो जाता है। अमल महात्मा से उनकी यात्रा के बारे में पूछता है।
महात्मा जी कहते हैं कि इस बार वे करल्यू द्वीप गए थे। अमल ताली बजाते हुए महात्मा जी को उनका वादा याद दिलाता है कि उन्होंने उसे भी अपने साथ ले जाने का वादा किया है जब वह पूरी तरह ठीक हो जाएगा। महात्मा जी कहते हैं कि उन्हें अच्छी तरह याद है और वह उसे ऐसे मंत्र भी सिखाएंगे कि अमल पूरे संसार में कहीं भी सैर करने जा पाएगा। माधव दत्ता बीच में टोक कर उन्हें यह बकवास बंद करने के लिए कहते हैं। अमल फिर भी महात्मा जी से करल्यू द्वीप के बारे में पूछता है। महात्मा जी कहते हैं कि वह चिड़ियों की आश्चर्यजनक जगह है जहाँ लोग नहीं है, सागर के किनारे, सुंदर पहाड़ और आसमान उस जगह की खूबसूरती को और बढ़ाते हैं। पानी का झरना पहाड़ों से पिघले हीरों की तरह नीचे की ओर बढ़ता है। तब अमल सोचता है कि काश वह एक पक्षी होता। तब महात्मा जी कहते हैं कि तब तो अमल को बहुत परेशानी होती क्योंकि वह तो बड़ा होकर दही बेचने वाला बनना चाहता है और कोई पक्षी उसकी दही नहीं खरीदेगा तो उसे नुकसान होगा | माधव दत्ता फिर टोकते हुए बकवास बंद करने को कहते हैं। अमल चाचा से पूछता है। कि दही वाला आकर चला गया। माधव दत्ता कहते हैं कि दही वाला अमल के लिए एक बर्तन में दही छोड़ कर अपने गांव कलमीपारा चला गया है, क्योंकि उसे अपनी भतीजी की शादी में बहुत काम है और एक बांसुरी वादक भी किराए पर लेना है।
अमल कल्पना करता है कि उसके पास राजा के पास से एक पत्र आएगा जिसमें अमल को डाकिया बनने को कहा होगा। गाँव का प्रधान उसका मजाक उड़ाते हुए कहता है कि राजवैद्य उसे देखने आएगा। नाटक के अंत में सचमुच एक वैद्य उसे देखने आता है।

मेरे विचार में ठाकुरदा एक बहुत ही उत्तम व्यक्ति थे। वे प्रतिदिन अमल के पास उसे दूर-देश की कहानियां सुनाने जाते थे। हालांकि वे एक साधारण व्यक्ति थे परंतु अमल के लिए वे उसके महात्माजी थे जो उसे सदैव आशावादी और ऊर्जावान बने रहने के लिए प्रेरित करते थे ताकि वह जल्दी अच्छा हो सके। ठाकुरदा चाहते थे कि अमल अपनी बीमारी से निजात पा जाए।
